EUROPE CREATIVE MEDIA - EL SER QUERIDO

Project summary

From the very first moment of Caballo Films’ foundation, our primary objective has always been the same: «to bet on relevant stories that make us reflect on issues that define us as a society». It has not been an easy journey but fortunately it has borne fruit at a critical, public and business level, allowing us to face a strategic turning point. We firmly believe that the present and future process for our company must be to own as many projects IPs as possible, aiming to achieve maximum independence from the majors and big platforms, which will allow us to continue creating a differentiated content, telling compelling stories. The role of the company has been sometimes hidden by the clients we have worked for, and this slate has been designed to take Caballo Films one step further and produce on our own, being able to keep the IP.

In parallel, this would revert and lead us to invest both in development of new projects, which would have a clear positive impact in our financial projection as a company too.

Specifically, the three projects of the slate, two feature films and one series, follow this philosophy and are crucial for us to achieve the objective of independence and positioning in the market for the negotiation of rights.

At the same time, it will undoubtedly allow us greater visibility in major film festivals. In addition, the slate co-production strategy will also help to promote greater international visibility, as we will need the support of producers from different countries with different production characteristics, such as Uruguay or Argentina (which will open exposure in the Latin American market) and of course countries such as France, which although so far it has already been our main international partner, these three projects involve a larger project size, so we will need more powerful partners in that country, who can position the projects and get that call of attention from the international market for this kind of projects which have such a strong authorial point of view.

Finally, if we achieve these objectives it will also mark a turning point for the company in terms of company’s turnover, since by keeping the IPs: i) we will obtain a higher percentage of the projects’ net revenues, ii) we will be able to tackle a greater number of projects simultaneously (without the financing of the slate we could not financially support simultaneously the three projects and we would have to delay some of them), iii) we will get a higher diversification of the business and therefore an increase of the different sources of income for the company. All these effects would also allow us to balance our position in the opened co-development negotiations we have, where we started from a disadvantageous position due to the lack of economic resources to be able to co-finance all developments.

Project Results:

Caballo Films staff has increased and having a more solid structure has allowed us to develop some of the creative materials in-house. Also, some of the production budgets and schedules have been developed in-house.

We also have been able to develop the scripts of these projects up to the final versions.

The main expected impacts are as following:
  • International distribution of the supported projects.
  • Consolidate alliances with European co-producers and expand production networks with Latam countries.
  • Introduce innovative formats for the audiovisual industry, such as the theatrical release in cinemas of TV series.
  • Enhance the team’s creative and technical capacities.
  • Fostering emerging talent, as is the case of Pedro Martín-Calero. We believe that after his successful debut feature (The Wailing), his second feature film can consolidate his career.

In summary, the grant received from Creative Europe Media has allowed us to advance the development of three audiovisual works, strengthen internal capacities, and build the foundations for a cross-border strategy. These projects are expected to go beyond national markets, consolidate partnerships at the European level and create new alliances at an international level.
